okie dokie... here comes a brain dump/soap box vision for 217mafia.com... with visual aids too!

some of this might be already possible and i just don't know how to use drupal/dan's setup...

Overall Goal: We need to steer 217mafia away from just being an audio archive in list format, and use it to drive people to similar sounds/things they may not know they'd like based on what brought them to the site in the first place.

Right now, a new user will come to the site, see a LOT of content, but have no clue how to locally find what they want unless they are looking for a specific thing.

We need to address that.

Here are some steps how:

1. Feature pages/mini-sites:
Harsh and I were talking about how certain recordings need to be presented in more than just a list format. For example, if Chris O made a new mix, he could upload the mix, the tracklisting, cover art, and that one page on its own on 217mafia would be sufficient and self-explanatory.

However, let's say we have a series of recordings for some kind of bigger event. I'm thinking the IMCfest recordings... if we have another multi-DJ party, all of their sets divided... Instead of just having all of these as one big mp3 file, or a series of separate files, we need to improve our organization of the files and that happens on the PRESENTATION LAYER...

the PRESENTATION LAYER should look something like this:

http://www.djmertz.com/elecunder

none of the links work on that page, but the Download The Mix link would go directly to the audio file... the Tracklist page would go to the individual page for each mix on 217mafia.

The point is tho, is that having a PRESENTATION LAYER (i'm done capitalizing after that), allows to not repeat shared text (like Geist's intro), display images in appealing way, and then also beat over the heads of our viewers that all of the content is related (i.e. while you could get one mix by itself these were all part of a series... a bigger project we all undertook... while you could get all of the mixes separately from one party, people need to understand the collaborative effort and the magnitude of our parties).

even if it means someone has to make static html pages, i think 217mafia.com REALLY needs something like this.

and we need it before we launch the hip hop EP project. each hip hop EP should have its own static page, not just a listing of the audio files.

2. Better front page:

We need to come up with a front page that teases content across our site. So that people see maybe one or two big items from this week's hitlist... they see links to the latest content... to our newest feature page (or whatever page we're pushing)... to our upcoming events.

http://www.residentadvisor.net/

I point out RA not because of its particular look or its content, but the way there are all these previews all over the place... and i can skim the front page all over, and find what interests me.

It is actually a blessing that we don't have as much content as RA... so creating previews/teasers on a front page that drive people to other parts of the site should be a little easier.

3. Podcast:

This is something I'm doing the research on right now... but we should have a straightforward 217mafia podcast... whenever new audio gets added, if you're subscribed to the podcast, it comes right down to your computer. That simple. We may not get a ton of subscribers at first, but it is something we should offer... it is the best way to get the full experience of CU's scene if...

4. We need more frequent audio updates:

I know a lot of people are sitting on recordings, waiting to go back and edit them into the highest quality possible. I am torn on that effort. I like that we're offering good quality recordings... but I also like people seeing that we all create a lot of mixes every single week with !parties, SNSS, Chillax, gigs, etc.

Right now, what has me in favor of getting stuff out more quickly instead of touching up every last waveform is Prins Thomas's RA Podcast this week. not the best audio quality by any means... but getting to hear the tunes is what has me excited. I don't need it to be on the quality to bump it on a F1 system. i just want to hear the music!

This might be the most contentious point. So if this sub-topic gets out of hand, let's start a new thread.

5. Integration/bios:
Dan and I started working on this and then it fell off because of the three weekends of events (particularly IMCfest) for Dan... but 217mafia needs to have lots of crosslinking much the same way RA does their stuff (i.e. if a mix has a track from the label Ghostly International, you click on the link and it takes you to a page about Ghostly).

So in an ideal world, if you were looking at a mix by Lincoln Jones, his name would be a link that would take you to a bio page for Lincoln... from there you would see all photos tagged with his name, you'd see a list of his mixes... a list of his upcoming gigs... let's say the gig said he was playing at Soma... Soma would be a link... you'd click on it... see their schedule (at least what we choose to post of it)... some info about the club... any other DJs that are on that schedule that are part of The Family, would also be links you could go to as well.

that's my thoughts... I love that Dan took the time to do the reorganizing he did. It has made me feel 100% comfortable telling people about 217mafia and pointing them there for content.

but we need to go up another step if we're going to start trying to hook random people we don't know in... if we want to use this site as a means of exposing how vibrant our local scene is... then we need to take a few more steps forward.

dan, i know you have things much bigger in your life right now than this site... but i'm just putting this out there as a roadmap for where we should go when you do have time to start approaching this.

if we want to schedule a web meeting with everyone interested and go grab lunch and discuss ideas, delegate tasks, etc.... i'm down for that when dan's ready.

i'm willing to pitch in wherever i can to help (designing, the limited web programming i know, gathering content, writing previews, etc)...

but yeah... those are my thoughts on 217mafia.com version 3.0

whatcha all think?

I have 70% serious aspirations to throw a rave at the IMC in february or march... maybe that might be a target date, what do you lot think? btw I'm all for the IMC because it really is the right space... I'm all for finding a nice small clubby box size space for a more intimate night, like for example upstairs of mike and molly's was briefly cool, and I've scoured and daydreamed about that for years myself. Nevertheless my inclination is against pandering and in favor of pioneering... if the local barflies can't handle driving more than 15 minutes to a perfect space, then they will just have to deal with the fact of an awesome rave, thrown by me, with support of friends, which is heavily advertised outside of town and has more out-of-towners in attendance than locals. When the scattered few locals take a peek in as the party is always underway, then maybe in their feeble minds they will get a brief glimmer of what they are- small-minded townies. Maybe it will only be years from now, well after I'm gone, that the IMC truly takes off as the right, cool space for great music events, but I certainly don't want to delay such progress.

That sounds bad ass! If there is anything I can do to help count me in. I'd have no problem help setup/strike/organize, i can bring my decks, my lighting rig, my amp/speakers (which probably wouldn't help in the IMC but its the thought that counts). I am totally down for a rave.

if life at the mertz household gets unbearable i might drive into the city for that. as much as i'd love to come support, it'd be nice if thanksgiving isn't that much of an ordeal that i feel the need to escape to smartbar.

i'll just pay cover or find james or lenny... so don't sweat me on the guestlist thing.
